L. Y. Sherman collection, circa 1816-2000.

Personal papers of L.Y. Sherman, a politician from Macomb, Illinois. As a member of the Illinois State Legislature, Sherman played a primary role in the establishment of Western Illinois University in Macomb. He went on to become Speaker of the House, Lieutenant Governor, and then a United States senator. The collection includes personal correspondence, including family letters from the Civil War and letters and artwork from artist Bernhardt Wall; a scrapbook of newspaper clippings on President Harding and his death; a scrapbook commemorating Sherman on his death; campaign and event ribbons; personal notebooks containing clippings, quotes, prose, and original poetry; a few artifacts; and some family photographs.
